Getting Comfortable With The Basics

Pixel Phone Notification Issues

If you have a PixeL Watch, check this setting first.

  • There’s a setting in the watch app that mutes phone notifications when the watch is connected. Maybe that’s enabled?
To mute notifications on your phone while wearing your Pixel Watch, use the companion app on your phone. Open the Google Pixel Watch app, tap Notifications, and toggle on Mute notifications on phone. You can also manage specific app alerts directly from your watch. [1, 2, 3, 4]
For a visual walkthrough of managing notifications and quick settings on your Pixel Watch:

Customize Your Notification Settings
You have a few options for how alerts are handled between your devices:
  • Mute Phone Alerts: Prevents your phone from ringing or vibrating for calls and notifications when the watch is actively being worn.
  • Silence Watch Alerts: To mute your wrist without affecting your phone, swipe down on your watch face to open Quick Settings, tap the Sound icon, and mute the ring and notification volumes.
  • Manage Specific Apps: From the App Notifications menu in the Pixel Watch phone app, you can toggle exactly which apps are allowed to push alerts to your watch. [1, 2, 3, 4]

For more advanced notification controls, troubleshooting, or app-specific behavior, refer to the Google Pixel Watch Notifications Support Guide. [1, 2]

First, let’s check the basics, just to be sure:
  • Do Not Disturb: Swipe down from the top of your screen with two fingers to open Quick Settings. Make sure Do Not Disturb is turned off.
  • Volume Settings: Press your volume up button, then tap the three dots ($\vdots$) on the slider that appears. Ensure the Ring & notification volume (bell icon) is turned up.
  • Silent Mode: Check your Quick Settings again to make sure the phone isn’t set to Silent or Vibrate (the ringer icon shouldn’t have a line through it or show vibration).

Bluetooth & Hearing Aids

Sometimes, even if not fully paired, Bluetooth connections can interfere with audio routing.
  1. Go to Settings > Connected devices.
  2. Is Bluetooth currently on?
  3. If it’s on, try turning Bluetooth off completely.
  4. Ask someone to call you (or call yourself from another phone) to see if the ringer works with Bluetooth disabled.
This helps us check whether the phone is trying to send the ringtone audio to a Bluetooth device (like your hearing aids), even if it fails.

App & Ringtone Checks

  • Check Ringtone: Go to Settings > Sound & vibration > Phone ringtone. Make sure a sound is selected and that it’s not set to “None”. Try picking a different default ringtone just to test it.
  • Test in Safe Mode: A third-party app could be interfering. Safe Mode temporarily disables all downloaded apps.
    • You can find instructions on how to reboot into Safe Mode here: How to restart your Pixel phone in Safe Mode
    • Once in Safe Mode, see if your phone rings. If it does ring in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is likely the cause.

Please try turning Bluetooth off first, and also check your specific ringtone setting.

To enable notification sounds for your messages app on a Pixel phone, open your Settings and navigate to Apps > Messages > Notifications. Ensure the master toggle is on, tap Notification categories, select Incoming messages, and make sure it is set to Alert and a sound is selected. [1, 2]
Step-by-Step Guide
    1. Open your phone’s Settings.
    2. Tap on Apps.
    3. Tap See all apps and select Messages (or whichever messaging app you use).
    4. Tap on Notifications.
    5. Make sure the toggle at the top is turned On.
    6. Tap on Notification categories.
    7. Tap specifically on Incoming messages (tap the text, not just the toggle switch).
    8. Ensure Alert is selected and that it is not set to Silent.
    9. Tap Sound to choose or confirm the notification tone you want to hear. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Additional Troubleshooting
If you are still not hearing message alerts after following these steps:
  • Check Do Not Disturb: Swipe down from the top of your screen with two fingers and ensure Do Not Disturb is turned off.
  • Check Volume Settings: Press your volume up button and tap the Settings/Sliders icon. Make sure your Ring & notification volume is turned up. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Turn on notification sounds by opening your phone’s Settings > Apps > Messages > Notifications > Incoming messages. Ensure the setting is on Default or Alerting (not Silent), then tap Sound and choose your preferred notification alert. [1, 2, 3]

How to Change Text Message Sound on Google Pixel …
If you are still not hearing sounds, check these common causes:
  1. Do Not Disturb: Swipe down from the top of your screen and ensure the “Do Not Disturb” icon is not highlighted, as this silences all alerts.
  2. App Notification Categories: Go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Notifications > Notification categories. Make sure the toggle next to Incoming messages is fully turned on.
  3. In-App Notification Settings: If you use Google Messages, tap your profile icon in the top right corner > Message settings > Notifications > Behavior sound and more. Ensure that your incoming messages are set to allow sound and vibration. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

If the primary settings are already toggled on, the issue is usually caused by a buried notification category, a connected Bluetooth device muting your alerts, or a hung app cache. [1, 2]
Follow these concrete steps to get your text sounds working:
1. Enable Sound Within the Notification Category
Even if notifications are turned on overall, your specific “Incoming messages” category might be muted. [1, 2]
  • Open the Messages app.
  • Tap your Profile Picture in the top-right corner and select Messages settings.
  • Tap Notifications > Behavior, sound and more.
  • Tap the text Incoming messages (do not just tap the toggle).
  • Ensure this is set to Default or Alerting (not Silent).
  • Tap Sound to verify an actual tone is selected. [1, 2]

2. Disconnect Smartwatches or Headphones
If you wear a smartwatch or use wireless earbuds, your phone is often designed to mute notification sounds on the device and send them directly to your wearable. [1, 2]
  • Turn off Bluetooth in your quick settings panel.
  • Have someone send you a text to see if the phone rings out loud. [1, 2]
3. Check “Notification Cooldown”
Your Pixel features a tool that gradually lowers the volume of consecutive notifications from the same app. [1]
  • Open your device Settings.
  • Tap Notifications.
  • Scroll down to the General section and check Notification cooldown.
  • Ensure this is turned off to test if you get your sound back. [1]

4. Clear the Messages App Cache
App data glitches can prevent sounds from triggering. This will not delete your text messages. [1, 2]
  • Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps.
  • Tap Messages.
  • Select Storage & cache.
  • Tap Clear cache, then restart your phone. [1]

If you continue to have trouble, you can consult the Google Pixel Help Community for additional troubleshooting steps. [1, 2, 3]

Add Custom Ringtones
To add a custom ringtone to your Pixel phone, make sure you have the audio file (like an MP3 or WAV) downloaded to your device. Then, open Settings > Sound & vibration > Phone ringtone, tap My Sounds, hit the “+” icon to locate your file, and select Save. [1, 2, 3]
Here is the exact step-by-step process for getting your own tracks to play when you get a call:
Step 1: Save the Audio File
First, ensure your song or audio clip is downloaded directly to your phone’s storage. You can save it to your Downloads or Music folders, or download it to your Google Drive. [1, 2]
Step 2: Add and Set the Ringtone
    1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
    2. Tap Sound & vibration.
    3. Tap Phone ringtone.
    4. Select My Sounds at the top.
    5. Tap the + (plus) icon in the bottom corner.
    6. Use the file browser to locate your downloaded audio file (you can use the top-left menu to filter by Downloads or your Google Drive).
    7. Tap the song/file to select it.
    8. Tap Save in the top right corner to confirm your new ringtone. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Step 3: Assign to Specific Contacts (Optional)
If you want to set your custom ringtone for a specific person rather than a general ringtone:
    1. Open the Contacts app.
    2. Tap the contact’s name.
    3. Tap the three dots in the top right corner.
    4. Select Set ringtone.
    5. Tap My Sounds, select your custom file, and hit Save. [1, 2]

Setting via the Files by Google App
Alternatively, you can assign an audio file directly through your phone’s file manager: [1, 2, 3]
  1. Open the Files by Google app.
  2. Go to the Audio or Downloads tab.
  3. Find your MP3 file, tap the three dots next to it, and select Set as ringtone. [1]
