LastPass confirmed a data breach involving its Salesforce customer support environment, stemming from the Klue supply chain attack. Attackers stole customer support data, including names and phone numbers. However, LastPass stated its core infrastructure was untouched, and user password vaults remain fully secure.
This event follows a massive, highly publicized security incident in 2022 where attackers accessed backups containing both encrypted and unencrypted vault data.
Context on Previous Incidents
While the actual password hashes were encrypted during the 2022 breach, metadata such as stored URLs and website account names remained unencrypted. Hackers have been actively attempting to crack the master passwords for these vaults, specifically targeting cryptocurrency-related accounts.
Recommended Actions
If you are a LastPass user, it is highly recommended to take these protective measures:
- Change Master Password: If you suspect your master password might be weak or you haven’t updated it since the 2022 breach, generate a new, highly complex master password.
- Update Site Credentials: Manually update passwords for high-priority sites—such as crypto wallets, banking accounts, and primary email accounts—just to be safe.
- Enable 2FA: Ensure robust Two-Factor Authentication is applied to both your LastPass account and all websites stored in your vault.
- Monitor for Phishing: Be highly vigilant against suspicious emails, as previously stolen personal data and customer support info may be used to target you with tailored phishing attempts.
