Getting Comfortable With The Basics

Access To Sensitive Information Everywhere

I have some files that I don’t think I want to be saved to the cloud, where I think others might have access. They include banking account numbers, investment information with passwords, and images of driver’s licenses, passports, and other ID cards. While I have printed them off and saved them to a fireproof safe, I still want a copy on my cell phone, iPad, or laptop to work on, change, update, etc.

Secure Access To Sensitive Information Everywhere

Having information available securely across mutable devices is a common issue. Even just typing something into a word processor oftentimes is backed up to the device or even to the cloud without us being fully aware of how it is done. These backups or saves, be it to the device or cloud, are not end-to-end encrypted (E2EE). Even things you save to your computer or device can be a security issue. If your device is stolen or even taken to a repair shop, those unencrypted files can be seen by anyone with access to it.

A password manager like BitWarden has several ways to create and save sensitive information securely with E2EE encryption and, in addition, make it available on all devices you own or use. For example, you could travel overseas and lose your devices and passport. You could go to a US consulate, use one of their computers to access your bitwarden account online and download a copy of your passport, driver’s license, and any other secure information you’ve saved.

Secure Notes

Saving a secure note in a password manager is a great way to lock sensitive information in a vault. Bitwarden offers such a feature. You might want to store software license keys, Social Security information, stock information, or just about any information that isn’t a login.

Secure Notes is a way to lock a note within your vault. That note can contain whatever you need.
