Living History Farm

Buffalo Bird Woman's Garden
Recreated Traditional Mandan, Hidatsa,
Arikira, Native American Garden

This garden is similar to what Lewis and Clark would have seen as they traveled up the Missouri River in 1804. Archaeological evidence shows that these tribes have a history of farming along the Missouri River Valley for over 800 years. Buffalo Bird Woman shared her knowledge of gardening with anthropologist Gilbert L. Wilson in 1912, and his published works provide us with her expertise. This garden contains corn, squash, beans, and sunflowers planted in the traditional fashion.
