Permanently berthed at Barker's Island, the S. S. Meteor (originally named the Frank D. Rockefeller) was built in 1896 and is the last remaining whaleback ship in existence. One of 44 whalebacks designed and built by Captain Alexander McDougall, the Meteor hauled a variety of cargo and commodities during her career, including iron ore, grain, sand, cars, and, near the end of her career, she was converted into an oil tanker. In 1972, she was brought home to Superior and is now located only one mile from where she was built. The S. S. Meteor and Maritime Museum is open seasonally for guided tours.

Rainy deck of the Meteor our last day east of the Mississippi!
