Trail to Cascade Falls
A primary outlet of Navajo Lake. Water leaves the lake through sink
holes, east of the dyke, and reappears as Cascade Falls (about 5 miles away).

After a three year drought the outlet is dry

Checkerboard Mesa

The horizontal lines, commonly called crossbedding, represents layers of wind-blown sand that builds up into sand dunes. These dunes were then buried, and the sand grains glued together by calcite and iron oxide to form sandstone. Crossbedding can be seen many places along the Zion Mt. Caramel Highway.

The vertical lines are less common. They are actually shallow cracks that result from stress and erosion on the rock surface. These cracks are probably caused by expansion and contraction, wetting/drying, or a combination of these processes.

Checkers anyone?
